Chillier weather doesn’t mean your favorite skirts and dresses have to go into hibernation. Incorporate your summer and fall items into your winter wardrobe by layering! With every winter comes a new opportunity to experiment—avoid falling into a rut with these styling inspirations!

Slip dresses are the perfect complement to a winter outfit—they’re thin and flouncy so you don’t look bulky when you layer them. Wearing a slip dress under an oversized turtleneck, all over skinny jeans keeps you cozy while adding a little flutter to your step.

During the colder seasons, button-downs are awesome for layering under sweaters, so why not emulate the same idea in dress form? Wear your shirtdress—the one from your Risky Business Halloween costume—under a sweater dress or leather dress for an interesting contrast in texture, and don’t forget to let the tails hang. If you have a short-sleeved sweater dress or leather dress, you can expose the sleeves of your shirtdress to update your look.

Beyoncé’s not the only one who can nail the “I woke up like this” look. The dressed down pairing of a midi skirt and oversized sweater can give you that undone, effortlessly chic style you’ve been searching for. Oversized outerwear drape flawlessly over an oversized sweater and contributes to the overall relaxed and easygoing vibe.

Tights are great and all, but a pair of over-the-knee boots with your shorter skirts and dresses can completely change an outfit. During the daytime, over-the-knee boots make a pretty bold statement, but we could all take a style tip from Candice Swanepoel’s slouchy yet sexy look shown above. For a more professional take on over the knee boots, wear more polished and structured pieces with a lighter, neutral-colored pair of thigh highs.

Maxi dresses aren’t just for bright, sunny days in the summer. Shorten your morning routine by throwing on a long duster coat or trench coat over your maxi dress to keep you warm and stylish.

The Kardashians never fail to spark some lively debate, but their taste in fashion is undeniable. If you love a full skirt like Kourtney Kardashian, add some edge to the skirt with a leather moto jacket, and to make the look more casual and comfortable, opt for a pair of sneakers instead of heels.

The possibilities for winter pairings that incorporate skirts and dresses are endless, so don’t be afraid to take risks and mix and match!
