The Met Gala- the thought elicits images of the rich and famous dressed to the nines in magnificent couture, strutting their stuff at what is considered the fashion industry’s premier annual red carpet event. This year, the theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, and designers certainly delivered, with an array of gorgeous, largely metal-toned gowns.
As the hype (and the flood of celeb insta posts) over this exclusive event dies down, Thirty Seventh reflects on this magical night not only to appreciate the outfits, but rather the stunning makeup looks that accompanied them.
Why focus on the beauty facet of a fundraiser dedicated to fashion, you may ask? The answer is simple: though we will likely never be able to afford Blake Lively’s beautiful Burberry dress or Kanye’s Balmain jacket hand-embroidered with pearls, all we need to replicate the Gala’s best makeup trends is a trip to the drug store and a $10 bill.
Trend: Silver Smolder
Given the futuristic theme, silver eyes made a major appearance at this year’s Met Gala. To replicate one of our favorite metallic looks rocked by stars such as Jourdan Dunn and Lara Stone, first take a black and silver palette such as the L’Oreal Colour Riche Dual Effects in Incredible Grey and swipe the black shadow across your lids. For subtle dimension, lightly dust the second darkest shade on the center of your eyelids. Finally, to get this look’s signature metallic pop, dampen your brush with some water, use the silver tone to highlight the inner corners of your eyes, and transform into a robotic goddess.
Trend: Vampy Lips
Even celebs like T Swift who typically favor a classic red lip pushed the envelop with this new take on an old favorite. To duplicate this deep oxblood pout, some prep is essential. First, exfoliate with e.l.f.’s Lip Exfoliator and then line your lips with L’Oreal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lipliner in Plum to prevent the color from bleeding out. Finally, apply Maybelline Color Sensational The Buffs Lip Color in Espresso Exposed all over the lip and prepare to fall in love with this major celeb trend.
Trend: Brown Smoky Shadow
With their subdued smoky eyes, stars like Kylie Jenner and Hailee Steinfeld proved that you don’t have to go bold to stand out. Try this sultry smolder for yourself using the Milani Everyday Eyes Powder Eyeshadow Collection in Bare Necessities, and lightly dust the dark brown tone beneath your lower lash line and across your lids, blending outward past the crease. Next, add glow by using the shiny brown shadow on the center of your eyes. To finish off, dab the light pink shimmer on your inner corners to give this look its subtle pop.
Trend: Graphic Metallic Liner
Warning: this look is not for the faint of heart, but was made for the girl who wants all eyes on her. Kristen Stewart and Willow Smith donned this daring yet refined look at the event, and it totally brought their shiny black outfits to a new level. To get their metallic glow, take a cream shadow like the Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Metal 24HR Cream Gel Eyeshadow in Silver Strike and apply in the geometric shape of your choosing.
For Kristen’s edgy shadow, we recommend using an angled brush like the e.l.f. Studio Small Angled Brush. To get Willow’s undereye dots, dab on the cream with a small, circular brush like the e.l.f. Professional Smudge Eye Sponge, and fill in any sparse areas using the ultra-precise e.l.f. Studio Brush Angled Eyeliner.
*Pro Tip: You can buy e.l.f. products at the bookstore on campus and in Vital Vittles!
Trend: Dramatic Red Pout
In a sea of metallic makeup, stars like Adriana Lima and Blake Lively slayed by going back to (bold) basics, with some vibrant red lips. To get Adriana’s über matte mouth, try Revlon’s Ultra HD Matte in the color Love and hop on the ultra-trendy matte lip bandwagon.
Blake’s radiant red lipstick was so perf that L’Oreal even made it into a product. Snag her shade, the L’Oreal Colour Riche Collection Exclusive Lip in Blake’s Red, at a drugstore near you!
